Climate and Weather in Rwanda

Rwanda, often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” has a pleasant tropical highland climate due to its elevation, making it an attractive destination for visitors throughout the year.


  1. General Climate

Type: Tropical highland climate

Temperatures: Moderate and consistent year-round, with daytime temperatures averaging between 22°C and 27°C (72°F – 81°F).

Altitude Effect: The higher altitudes, such as in the Virunga Mountains and around Volcanoes National Park, are cooler, with temperatures occasionally dropping below 10°C (50°F).


  1. Seasons in Rwanda

Rwanda experiences four distinct seasons based on rainfall:

  1. Short Dry Season (December to February):

Warm temperatures and minimal rainfall.

Ideal for outdoor activities and gorilla trekking.

  1. Long Rainy Season (March to May):

Heavy rainfall, especially in April.

Lush vegetation and fewer tourists, making it a good time for budget travel.

Roads to remote areas may become muddy and challenging.

  1. Long Dry Season (June to September):

Warm, sunny days with little to no rain.

Peak season for tourists, especially for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking.

Wildlife viewing is excellent as animals gather around water sources.

  1. Short Rainy Season (October to November):

Lighter rains compared to the long rainy season.

Scenery remains green, and wildlife is still visible.
